Introduction
The Cold War: the most tense and dangerous conflict ever faced by mankind. Two superpowers competed against each other for world domination and implanted their governmental philosophies in as many smaller nations as they could convince to support them. As the world hovered on the edge of annihilation through nuclear warfare, both nations, the Soviet Union and the United States, were pushed to the brink of collapse in a race to outdo the other nation in terms of weapons, technology, and power. In this pursuit and in the complete hatred of communists that was shared by most Americans in this time, both the people and the government in our nation pushed aside the ideals of democracy, liberty, opportunity, equality, and rights. For most Americans, destruction of the communist ideology was more important than individual ideals.
